Explore Our History
In 1912 after immigrating from Germany, John and Pauline Nill opened a bakery called Nills Bakery on Main Street in Islip.
The story goes that the man who owned the General Store at 199 Maple Street, Islip, at the time, owed John Nill money that he could not pay so he offered the store and conjoined house as payment for his debt. So John Nill sold the bakery, combined the general store with groceries and called it Nills groceries. Later on it became mostly groceries. John Nill ran the store from 1921 to 1959. At that time his son Paul Nill took over and ran it until 1979.
The store was owned and operated by the Nill family for 58 years. Many locals remember the dimly lit interior with a fantastic candy counter. They also remember an arcade machine that would send a shock through your arms as you played it for a penny. After 1979 it became known as Grace and Jim’s. It operated for a short time under that ownership. Then in 1982 Bob Kleiber purchased the store and created a solid deli / sandwich shop.
The neighborhood supported “the red deli” as it was known and it flourished. In March of 2023 Bob sold the business and property to John Boccone. Many improvements were initiated by John and have been very well received by the neighbors. Kleiber’s country store , as it is now known will continue to provide top notch deli fare long into the future.
